Bluewater Cruising in Ancient Egypt?

shutterstock_241725661.jpg

When we think of Ancient Egypt, we think of  the pyramids, the desert, the Nile, mummies and the afterlife. Most of us don’t think of sailing. However, boats are the common thread that tie these symbols of Ancient Egypt together.

Just this past week, Archaeologists have discovered a more than 4,000-year-old tomb decorated with colorful drawings and sculptures hidden beneath the sands of Saqqara, the sprawling royal burial ground located in the desert near Cairo, Egypt.

Hieroglyphs carved above the tomb’s door identify its owner as a man named Wahtye, who served King Neferirkare of the Old Kingdom’s fifth dynasty, which ruled from around 2500 to 2350 B.C. Other carvings spell out Wahtye’s lofty titles, including royal purification priest, royal supervisor and inspector of the sacred boat.

At a press conference announcing the tomb’s discovery, Mostafa Waziri, secretary general of the Supreme Council of Antiquities, called the find “one of a kind in the last decades,” National Geographic reported.

Vibrantly colored and well-preserved reliefs adorn the tomb’s approximately 33 foot-by-10-foot gallery, featuring images of Wahtye with his wife, mother and other relatives. Scenes of musical performances, wine and pottery making, sailing, hunting and making funerary furniture also come to life in drawings on the tomb’s walls.

Egyptians built some of the earliest boats ever recorded.

Some of the earliest boats ever recorded belonged to the Egyptians. Paintings depicting ships appear on ancient Egyptian vases and murals around the year 6,000 BCE. Much of Egyptian civilization developed along the Nile River, making maritime transportation essential to trade. The first ships were built with papyrus reeds and were propelled by rowers using oars. As time passed, sails appeared and wood replaced papyrus. The wooden boats were modeled after the papyrus boats: they had flat bottoms, no keels, and square sterns. The wooden planks were held together with rope, and the spaces between the planks were caulked with reeds. These were sailed in addition to being rowed. Ancient Egyptian sails were square.

Most of these ships were ships of trade; they carried Egyptian goods to other Mediterranean lands, and brought back goods from those lands to Egypt. Other Egyptian boats were part of an Egyptian Navy. The Royal Fleet fought Egypt’s enemies, and enforced shipping law on the Nile. Individual religious temples sometimes had fleets of ships. Egyptians also used their ships for exploration. During the reign of Queen Hatshepsut, explorers visited the eastern coast of Africa. Under Rameses III, Egyptians made a crossing of the Indian Ocean.

The construction of the Pyramids and other famous Egyptian monuments would not have been possible without boats. Ancient Egyptian Boats even crossed the desert. They were designed to be deconstructed and then carried across the sand to be launched again for exploration of the Red Sea.

Boats were such an important part of Egyptian life, they were integrated into religion and mythology.

A solar barge (also solar bark, solar boat, sun boat) is a mythological representation of the sun riding in a boat. Many early Egyptian goddesses/sun deities, as well as the gods Ra and Horus, are sometimes depicted as riding in a solar barge. In Egyptian myths of the afterlife, Ra rides in an underground channel from west to east every night so that he can rise in the east the next morning.

VICEM WINDSOR CRAFT 36 HARDTOP

The Windsor Craft 36 built by (Vicem Yachts) is more than a luxury boat, its a work of art. This is truly a magnificent boat  from bow to stern and even though the fit and finish topside is impressive, the below deck space will give you the feeling of being in a classic wooden cruising yacht. Below, you are wrapped in rich mahogany joiner work with attention to every detail. The overhead is made of wood planks painted with while Awlgrip which looks like lacquer, and mahogany strips run athwartship, again drawing upon the classic interior decor of the yachts of yesteryear.   The hull is over an inch thick and utilizes choice mahogany planking in opposing directions to provide strength as well as function. The triple planked African mahogany uses the West System of epoxy impregnation. The result is a hull that is as impervious to water migration as is fiberglass and needs no more upkeep. On the forward deck and aft deck the (Windsor Craft 36) has beautiful mahogany with dozens of coats of varnish. All that is needed to keep this up is some touch up every six months or so. The side decks are Awlgrip. The (Vicem Windsor Craft) 36 requires no more maintenance than a fiberglass hull, but has all of the aesthetic advantages of wood. The settee forward will be your private dining car and personal space for enjoying your time aboard out of the eye of the public.  The table and upholstery have the same detailed look and feel as that in the cockpit. A filler cushion is easily at hand should the occasion arise for a full-length bed. The head is on the starboard side and is a small version of what one might expect to find in an executive suite. All counter tops, both in the head and in the galley are granite. The (Windsor Craft 36) built by (Vicem) Yachts is built for yachtsmen – both power and sail – who want not only the very best in a day boat, but one with truly rare classic attributes along the modern appliances and technology. Highly Recommended.  Helm Deck Air Less than 300 hours on the Volvo Diesels Onana 5 KW Generator.

Construction(Vicem Windsor Craft) are constructed from cold-molded mahogany. The process involves applying solid wood strips of veneer in three opposing layers over the mold, then saturating each layer using two-part West System epoxy. (Vicem) says that this results in hulls that are lighter, stronger and more durable than traditionally built fibreglass boats. Each hull is said to take 3,800 man-hours to build.

Engine AccessThe twin diesels are accessed though a hinged hatch that raises the aft portion of the L-shaped cockpit settee via a hydraulic ram. A ladder leads below and there is very good access all around the engines. Another hinged hatch forward in the cockpit sole provides excellent access to a large storage area as well as the fuel and water tanks, water heater, seawater strainers, batteries and the generous 5 kW Onan generator. The flooring throughout the cockpit/helm area is teak planking, which wisely is being left to weather naturally.

AccomodationsThe accommodation area forward features a teak and holly cabin sole, a bow berth, a linear galley area to port and the head/shower to starboard. The mahogany below is mostly satin finished with gloss trim, which works well considering the huge amounts of wood. Again, the woodwork is exquisite and the galley and head compartments are truly works of art. The berth can be configured as two singles or, with an infill cushion, it becomes almost palatial in size. This (Windsor Craft 36) sleeps 3 (2 below and 1 in the fully enclosable cockpit)The headliner in the accommodation area and the covered cockpit area are of off-white molded fiberglass that looks like tongue and groove planking. This is a real traditional touch from the days when overheads were planked and it adds even more of the classic look to this yacht. All doors are solid mahogany, another feature seldom seen today.

Manufacturer Provided Description Shorthanded sailing is easy in this modern Hallberg-Rassey cruiser. It is both high-pointing and fast, but also seakindly. It is a boat made to go around the world or cruise local waters. There is space for all the modern comfort aids. Hull and deck are GRP, built under supervision of Lloyd’s Register of Shipping. A Lloyd’s certificate is supplied with each boat. The hull is insulated above the water line. Deck is GRP sandwich construction, 35mm for strength and insulation. The lead keel is attached with stainless steel bolts. The mast is stepped on a base on the cabintop directly over a reinforced bulk head. Cockpit protected by permanent windscreens in tempered glass in light alloy frames. The middle pane opens. Sprayhood in synthetic material with aluminum frames. Hardtop is available as an option. Handrails, companionway, hatch guides, sole and seats in cockpit are all in solid Bangkok teak. The cabin is done in selected mahogany, hand-rubbed and treated to a silk smooth finish. The seagoing galley so arranged that one can work safely even in heavy seas, and has deep, double sinks and a well-insulated icebox.

Vessel OverviewStarting forward is an anchor locker with large deck access and a dividing shelf. A watertight bulkhead separates the chain locker from the forward cabin. Forward is a v-berth cabin. The forward head/shower compartment has a china sink, wipe down surfaces, separate shower, and teak grating. Aft to port is a guest stateroom with bunks and storage lockers. Aft of the main bulkhead is a large salon with “L” shaped dinette to port, a drop leaf table, and two easy chairs to starboard. A “U” shaped galley is to starboard of the companionway ladder with counters and ample storage. To port is a large, forward facing navigation station. There is a true walk through passageway to the aft cabin The interior of SOLANA V is finished in satin varnish African mahogany a teak and holly sole. The locker doors are of solid mahogany and louvered for ventilation. Ventilation is provided by five dorade vents, opening ports in coachroof sides and opening overhead hatches. Extensive overhead and reading lights combine with beige curtains, carpet and cushions upholstered in rich fabric with accents to provide a warm and inviting interior.    Headroom below is 6′-3″.

This (Hallberg- Rassey for sale) hull is white gel coat with off white coach roof and blue sheer, boot, and coaming stripes. There are SS rub strips at cleats and lifeline gates and SS strakes on the rub rail. The keel is an external lead casting bolted to a sloped fiberglass keel stub. The hull and deck are insulated with closed cell foam. The decks and coachroof are overlaid with high quality Burmese teak with a caprail on raised bulwark and teak handrails on the coach roof. The cockpit is protected by a factory installed hard dodger with tempered glass. Varnished companionway chart tables are located on each side of the companionway. On deck stowage is in three large lockers. Forward is a top opening chain locker with shelf and room for fenders, lines and other gear. The cockpit locker is below the starboard seat. There is a very large full beam locker located at the stern accessed by two deck hatches. All lockers drain overboard.

Large stainless steel stanchions are mounted on the raised bulwark to maximize deck space and minimize deck penetrations.  SOLANA V has solid stainless steel hand rails run from the stern pushpit to the midships boarding gates.  Hinged solar panels mount on these rails.  Uncoated wire rope, double lifelines run forward from the mid-ship gates to the bow pulpit.  Oversized aluminum mooring cleats are aft, forward and amidships.  A folding stainless steel swim ladder is mounted on the stern swim step and can be deployed from the water for safety and sturdy enough to climb with dive gear.
